Public Memorial for Murray Sinclair, Mazina Giizhik

Canada Life Centre, Winnipeg

I was fortunate to attend the public memorial service for Murray Sinclair, held at Canada Life Centre.

Listening to the Sinclair family, and the numerous dignitaries and delegations express the many ways that Murray impacted Canadian society highlighted a forceful legacy. There was a unifying sense of support that could be felt building in the room, both toward the Sinclair family, and for the causes of reconciliation and Indigenous justice that Murray took up over his life, both personally and professionally.

William Prince’s rendition of 7 was a moving tribute, that summed up several of themes that speakers brought. “After and incredible lifetime, it’s nice to be there for Murray for a change, y’know?”, he said.

When you’re lookin’ far into the future, Don’t forget how far you’ve already come.

Senator Sinclair, you have changed the direction of Canadian society for the better, at great personal cost. Thank you.
