Owning History: Indigenous Histories and Records Access

Fort Garry Hotel, Winnipeg

Manitoba Indigenous Tuberculosis History Project

An interest in both archival records access and local Manitoban history led me to attending the Owning History conference. The event also served as the launch for the Missing Patients Research Guide, assembled by the Manitoba Indigenous Tuberculosis Project.

I found one presentation about the archival preservation of records of the pass system particularly interesting. On the other hand, various researchers discussed the challenges brought by constraints placed on research that deals with historic health information. For me, this highlighted the unintended consequences of legislation intending to protect private data.
