2023 Riley Lecture in Canadian History: Laura Madokoro

The 2023 Riley Lecture in Canadian History featured Dr. Laura Madokoro (Carleton University), titled City Borders: Exploring the History of Sanctuary in North America.

I found the presentation to be a fascinating overlap between the history of 20th Century of Urban Development, which I have mostly engaged with previously in the context of Western Canada, and the role of the Church, in this case exerting political force through the sanctuary process.

I am excited to see this work continue to develop, and to explore how it interrelates with the Settler-Colonial project in the Canadian west.
